Designing smart community

Through big data, we helped the City of Fredericton visualize the future of Fredericton as a connected, accessible and affordable smart community.

The Challenge

When the Canadian federal government announced their ‘Smart Cities Challenge’, the City of Fredericton approached our team to help create a data visualization that would communicate the many ways that Fredericton demonstrates the qualities of what it means to be “smart”. The term ‘SmartCity’ had become synonymous with technology and connectivity, and while Fredericton was advanced in both areas, they wanted to highlight the initiatives they deemed ‘smart’. Examples of the themes included: Immigration, Accessibility, Supporting First Nations through the Friendship Accord, Mobility, and Affordable Housing.

The Solution

We wanted to demonstrate that data is not simply a number. It represents a person, a story, a lifestyle. We combined survey data with real-world experiences shared through in-person interviews to communicate the data points across visual imagery. Fredericton was selected as a National finalist.
